How to make a photo transparent

A semi-transparent photo and a transparent background are different jobs

If you need to dim the whole picture so that text stays readable on top of it, you are in the right place: the tool makes the image semi-transparent as a whole or inside the selected area.

Uniform transparency and gradient

Which level to pick

• 40–60% — the subject reads, but does not fight the content on top.
• 70–90% — a light dimming that softens the contrast.

Can I upload a JPG?

Yes. Upload anything: with uniform transparency the result is saved as PNG, because only that format stores an alpha channel. A JPG would fill the transparent pixels with black.

How do I make only the background transparent, not the whole picture?

That is background removal, not a transparency change. The background removal tool separates the object and leaves transparency behind it.

Can I make only a part of the image transparent?

Yes. Turn on area mode and set its position and size, or use a gradient.

What format is the result downloaded in?

PNG for uniform transparency, so the alpha channel survives. Gradient mode needs no transparency, so the format stays as it was.
